What Causes Spider Veins?
Research suggests that spider veins may be hormonally induced and are particularly associated with high-hormone states caused by pregnancy and menstruation in females. It is estimated that at least half of all women are bothered by these unsightly marks, and the odds of developing spider veins increase as we grow older.
Spider veins may develop from a number of factors, such as:
- Heredity and age
- Hormonal shifts
- Pregnancy and menstruation
- Weight gain or trauma
- Exogenous hormones
- Prolonged sitting or standing
Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins
The most common type of treatment for spider veins and varicose veins is sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a special treatment used to help blood vessel malformations such as the development of spider veins. This procedure involves a special substance that is injected directly into the blood vessels. This solution causes the vessels to scar and collapse, which then forces the blood to flow through other, healthier veins. The collapsed veins will then be reabsorbed into the tissue, which leads to fading in their appearance.
Spider Vein Treatment Recovery Process
In most cases, full activity is resumed immediately after treatment. In fact, some people are treated during their lunch hour. Response to any vein therapy is variable and perfect results should not be expected. To date, there is no safer, faster, or more cost-effective treatment known, including lasers. Post-treatment, we recommend that you have a yearly check-up as more veins may appear for the same reasons you have them now – mostly due to heredity, hormones, and lifestyle.
Special Morrhuate Treatment
Dr. Kaplan uses a special solution called Morrhuate, which was developed as a mixture of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids. The use of Morrhuate thus eliminates the need for saline or synthetic solutions. Morrhuate is FDA approved, safe, and virtually painless. The formula does not burn or cause cramps.
Touch up reatments require only about one-third of the amount used in the original treatment. Evidence suggests that spider vein treatment with Morrhuate is about 10 to 15 times more effective than saline. It is also a much faster treatment, often allowing all spider veins to usually be treated effectively in one session.
