For many people stretch marks are part of everyday life. There aren’t many women who have avoided getting them during pregnancy or people who haven’t put on weight or had a growth spurt at some time in their lives. For many people, stretch marks aren’t a big deal, and are usually covered up or hardly visible. But for some people it can affect confidence and the way that they live their lives.
This is especially the case for those who enjoy spending time on the beach, when that eagerly awaited Orlando dream beach holiday can turn into a nightmare.
What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks occur when there is quick growth (or the putting on of weight) and the skin stretches suddenly. The middle layer of the skin breaks and the deeper layers of the skin start to show through. They often start off a red or purple colour, but with time, will fade away.
How to prevent them
There are always going to be times when stretch marks are unavoidable – such as during pregnancy. However, there are things that you can do to help to prevent stretch marks. The first is to stay hydrated and take care to really look after your skin.
You should moisturize and massage your skin regularly and use a moisturizer which is rich in vitamin A and vitamin E. Obviously, trying to avoid putting on weight is also a big factor in preventing the occurrence of stretch marks.
Healthy skin can lower your chances of getting stretch marks, so you should try to eat a healthy diet, but one rich in vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc and silicon which are all great for maintaining the health of your skin.
What can you do about them?
If you do find that you are bothered by stretch marks, you do have a few options open to you. Dr Kaplan and Dr Yee in their excellent cosmetic surgery practice in Florida have a number of solutions.
- Cosmetic Surgery – This is a good option if you have recently gained then lost weight. Procedures such as a tummy tuck or arm lift will tighten up the areas where you have lost weight and are likely to have stretch marks, whilst leaving your body beach perfect.
- Non-Cosmetic Surgery – Non-cosmetic surgery can be far less intrusive and a less drastic measure. Procedures such as micro-needling, among other treatments can be highly effective in reducing stretch marks.
Whilst there are many ways that you can avoid or at least reduce the appearance of stretch marks, it is unlikely that a person will go through their whole life without a stretch mark. So if you do have them, there’s nothing to be ashamed about. If you find that you are bothered about the appearance of stretch marks, don’t worry, you have a few options open to you.
