Liposuction FAQs

How much does the procedure cost?

The cost of liposculpture will vary depending on what areas are done and how many areas are being done at a time. We offer a FREE consultation with Dr. Kaplan to discuss specifics of your procedure and the fee.

How long does it take to perform the procedure?

The amount of time it takes to perform liposuction will vary depending on what areas are done and how many areas are being done at a time. A patient can normally expect to be in the office an hour before appointment for pre-op preparations and administration of pre-op medications. The actual procedure normally takes 1 to 2 hours.

How is liposculpture done?

After proper local anesthesia is achieved, a thin suction tube (cannula) is placed into the body fat through small incisions. A vacuum is applied through a hose attached to the cannula. This draws fat out of the body.

What type of anesthesia is used?

Before the procedure, you will be given an oral medication to relax you. Local anesthesia will be used prior to your procedure. You will be awake during the procedure.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

The areas that can be treated are as follows: fat deposits beneath the chin, neck, on the flanks, hips, abdomen, inner and outer thighs, knees, upper arms, breast, and male chest.

Is there a limit to the number of areas you can have done at a time?

The number of areas that can be treated at one time depends on several factors such as the amount of fat that is to be removed and the patient’s height and weight. This question can be answered for you at the time of your consultation with Dr. Kaplan.

What do I have to do to prepare for the procedure?

There will be preoperative instructions discussed with you at the time of your consultation, and will also be given to you by the staff when you book your appointment.

Do I have to be on a special diet?

There is not a special diet per se that you have to be on leading up to your appointment. However, we recommend that you be on a well-balanced, nutritional diet as part of a healthy life style.

What is the down time after liposculpture?

For liposuction on the neck area, you could have surgery Friday afternoon and return to work on Monday. For liposculpture on the torso, arms, and legs, recovery depends on how many areas are being treated. In most cases, you can usually return to work within 2-5 days.

What special instructions do I have to follow after the procedure?

Dr. Kaplan and the staff will provide specific postoperative instructions to you. In general, you will wear a special garment following your liposculpture. After liposuction on the neck area, you would wear your garment for 60 hours. In most other cases involving other areas of the body, you would wear the appropriate garment under clothing 24 hours a day for three days and then 12 hours a days for ten days.

Can liposculpture be used as a weight loss method?

No. The fat cells that are removed during the liposculpture procedure are removed permanently. However, if you gain weight, fat cells that remain in your body will store additional fat.

Do I get pain medications for afterwards?

Yes. The appropriate prescriptions are given to the patient prior to the scheduled procedure. It is our goal to keep our patients as comfortable as possible.
